To preface the course registration process you first must know it is completely different from the University of Hawaii's course registration system, STAR, where you can preset the courses you would like to take, a continuously updated vacancy count and the ability to request an override. Before submitting any modules for registration or appeals double check they are equivalent to courses at UH Manoa and for business students for Shidler credit. Speaking from personal experience this process is going to be strenuous, time-consuming and stressful part of applying to NUS. A good resource to have before looking into course equivalencies is to use NUSMODS. This will help you figure out module descriptions, module times, workload (how much time is allocated to lectures, tutorials, projects, and etc.) and so much more so use it! Take note that each part of this process is an on a first come first serve basis so have all of your modules planned out a day or night before and that they usually open up at 9 AM Singapore Time.
Pre-Registration
This is the first of many steps to acquire your courses at NUS. This part of the process will be held at the same time as you submit your application to NUS (https://myapplications.nus.edu.sg/). You are required to submit a load of 8 modules (Maximum) that you would like to "read" during the semester. If you do not choose 8 modules there is a possibility the university will add a module they believe fits into the major wether you want to be in it or not. Once you have selected 8 modules you are interested in taking you then must rank your modules from one to eight of which ones you would like to prioritize getting into.
Once accepted into NUS via application outcome you will also be able to see which modules you were accepted into and rejected from. From there look at the courses you got into and input them into your NUSMODS Timetable to workload for the week. If you were given courses that you decided you didn't want and found courses you were interested in more, fear not there is still registration part two!
Registration Part Two
So if you thought pre-registration was stressful then the best of luck to you best the first week before modules begin is "Registration Part Two". This is where the university allows you to submit courses you would like to add on to your workload. If you're worried that you have too many classes on your plate don't worry, the week after you will be able to add and drop course. If you are looking to switch lectures or sections you must wait for the requesting/appealing modules during the first week of modules.
Similar to pre-registration you must have your module codes ready to submit. Along with that this time around they give you a vacancy count of how many students are allowed to enter into the module and the chance to replace a pre-allocated module from pre-registration for the module you are submitting for now. Within the week you can check back and see which modules you were accepted for.
Requesting/Appealing Modules
This part of the course application process is dire for those who have not met the required amount of transferring credit back to UH Manoa. This step is an opportunity for those unsatisfied with their modules to request and appeal modules they would like on their schedule. Take note, that once you submit a request/appeal for a module or modules you are unable to submit another request until all the modules on your previous request have been answered. So I advise you to take note of which classes you want (even if they overlap each other) before submitting an appeal.
For my case, I was required to take 12 transferring credits back to my home university to be considered a full-time student, with three of the modules being business equivalent modules. I was given three modules at the time of my application outcome, from there I wanted to switch classes that better catered to my schedule of extracurricular activities and travels so I submitted requests and appeals until I acquired four modules that fit my schedule and went toward completing my degree.
Requesting/Appealing Tutorials and Labs
This is the last step of the process but it may not apply to everyone unless your modules require you to partake in weekly/biweekly tutorials or labs. At this part of the process, you are able to switch out of the current tutorial or lab you are a part of to another if there are any. When doing this don't forget to consider some tutorials and modules are placed on odd or even weeks. Keep that in mind to help you manage your workload a lot easier.
My Modules
As I have said in the beginning this process was very strenuous, time-consuming and stressful but if you are willing and able to see it all through it will be worth it! Now I present to you my Spring 2020 modules. I know the three-hour-long lectures sound dreadful but typically lecturers will give the class a 10-15 minute break in the middle of the lecture and release the class 15-30 mins early to allow students who have modules at other faculty to make their way over.
